How Do You Know when it's Time to Replace your Heating Equipment?

Is your heating equipment past it's prime?
When is it really the right time to replace your inefficient boiler or furnace? Does it make sense to be proactive or wait for that first really cold day to see if your old equipment will make it through another season?
Mary Beth Breckenridge of The Chicago Tribune wrote an interesting article on the merits of replacing your furnace before that freezing cold winter day that it stops working to save and take advantage of better efficiency and realizing lower costs.

Once you determine that you woud like to replace your furnace, here are some suggestions on what to do next.
- Consider a high efficiency furnace. Home heaitng systems last somewhere in the vicinity of 25 years, so an investment in a more efficient system makes the most sense. Your energy savings alone, not to mention the comfort of a new system, will more than pay you back over time.
- Examine your previous repair costs and monthly energy costs to determine if the investment is wise.
- Replace your heating equipment not only for a potential sale of your home in the future, but for your comfort, today!
There's a great chart that will calculate your savings, but you must first know your current systems 'fuel utilization efficiency costs'. (A reliable, professional contractor can help you make these determinations) This chart will help you by comparing your current costs to that of a new high efficiency system.
