• Set your thermostat at a comfortable and consistent temperature. Try raising the thermostat a degree or two during the day during summer months, and lower a degree or two in winter months. Your system will turn on and off less frequently sparing wear and tear on the equipment while saving you money on energy costs.

• Keep air vents and returns clear of furniture, rugs and draperies. You don’t want to block airflow.  You’ll be surprised at how this can make a difference on the operation of your system and your comfort.

• Use a programmable set-back thermostat to reduce your heating and cooling energy costs. If no one is home during the day, you can raise or lower the temperature, still maintaining comfort and return to your every-day favorite settings an hour before you typically return home. You’ll be surprised at the difference in your utility costs.  

• (Did you know that you can save approximately 10% on your energy costs by consistently setting back your thermostat higher or lower 10-15 degrees over an 8 hour period of time each day? That’s a perfect setback for the hours your home may be unoccupied during the day. That’s what our friends at energysaver.gov tell us!)

• Program your thermostat a few degrees lower while your family sleeps during winter months. Not only will you save money, but you may you experience a better night’s sleep. (Some folks will actually drop the setting 10 degrees and program a thermostat to raise the temperature 30 minutes before the alarm clock wakes them!)

• Business owners can enjoy the same savings by having a professional contractor install a set-back thermostat to lower the temperature of their office, warehouse and retail space during unoccupied or ‘closed’ hours.

• Zone your system if possible Multiple zones in a home can  reduce costs by allowing for setting comfortable temperatures only in the rooms you are use. For example…if no one is in the bedroom level of your home during the day, you can lower or raise the temperature significantly for extended periods of time with no sacrifice of comfort and impact your energy costs, too!

• Close curtains and shades during very hot summer weather. Your air conditioning system has to work that much harder to overcome the heat that builds up over the course of the day.

• Give your oven a break!  Do your cooking early in the morning or late in the day when it’s not the hottest during summer months. The heat from your oven makes your air conditioning system work that much harder.

• Keep your landscaping trimmed surrounding your outdoor unit…it needs room to “breathe” in order to work properly

• Contact a professional heating and air conditioning company to service your system annually. This will insure better efficiency, safety and reliability
